BAYAN MUNA CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE HALT TO ALL MANILA BAY RECLAMATION PROJECTS AMID DEVASTATING FLOODS

Bayan Muna Chairman Neri Colmenares strongly condemned the still ongoing reclamation projects in Manila Bay, citing their direct link to the extreme flooding experienced in the National Capital Region (NCR) due to Typhoon Carina.

“Bahang-baha pala sa Bagong Pilipinas!Ito ba ang ipinagmamalaki ni Pres. Marcos Jr. noong SONA nya nung Lunes na napakarami na daw na nagawang flood control projects? Pero kahit anong flood control project ang gawin mo o pagkalkal ng basura sa mga estero kung ang pupuntahan ng tubig ay barado o tinambakan na ng reclamation siguradong babaha at ganito na nga ang nangyayari ngayon,”” he opined.

“The massive flooding we are witnessing in Metro Manila, particularly in areas like Malabon, Quezon City, Valenzuela, Marikina, Caloocan and Rizal where floodwaters have reached second floors, is a direct consequence of these reckless reclamation projects,” Colmenares stated. “It’s clear that these projects are exacerbating the vulnerability of our communities to climate-related disasters.”

Colmenares highlighted the urgent need for immediate action, echoing calls from various sectors to halt all reclamation activities in Manila Bay. “We cannot stand idly by while our people suffer. The Marcos Jr. administration must issue a definitive order to stop these destructive projects immediately,” he asserted.

The former Bayan Muna lawmaker also raised concerns about the environmental impact of the reclamation projects, citing data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showing a significant decline in fish species supply in affected areas. “These projects not only increase flood risks but also threaten the livelihoods of our fisherfolk and the food security of our nation,” he explained.

Furthermore, Colmenares questioned the transparency and motives behind the Philippine Reclamation Authority’s plans to resume certain projects by mid-2024. “How can the PRA claim these projects will enhance marine goods output when we’re seeing clear evidence of declining fish populations? This seems to prioritize corporate interests over the welfare of our people and our environment,” he remarked.

“We stand in solidarity with the fisherfolk, environmental groups, and concerned citizens who are fighting against these reclamation projects. The government must prioritize the safety and well-being of its people over profit-driven development,” Colmenares concluded.

Bayan Muna calls on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to conduct a truly independent and comprehensive assessment of the reclamation projects’ impacts and to take immediate action to protect our communities and ecosystems.
