WHILE farmers have yet to recover from the losses incurred in view of the scorching heat comes another debacle seen to pin their hopes of recovery as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) hoists tropical depression warning signal no. 1 is the island provinces of the Visayas region.

Affected by Aghon – the first tropical depression this year – are Eastern Samar, Dinagat, Siargao and Bucas Grande islands.

In its tropical cyclone bulletin released around 5:00 this morning, PAGASA warned residents of the areas to be cautious amid intermittent rains within the next 36 hours as the state weather bureau said that Aghon was spotted 340 km east of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur.

PAGASA added that the tropical depression was moving west northwestward at 30 km/h packing maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 55 km/h.

It is also expected to move generally northwestward or north northwestward from Friday until Saturday while slowly intensifying.

Aghon is expected to landfall in the vicinity of Eastern Samar on Saturday morning as a tropical depression, and pass north northwestward over Eastern Visayas, then emerge over the waters off the east coast of Bicol Region tomorrow afternoon or evening as a tropical storm.

On Sunday, the cyclone will begin “recurving” generally northeastward or north northeastward over the waters east of Luzon while starting to continuously intensify.

“Current forecast scenario shows intensification into a severe tropical storm by mid Sunday and into a typhoon by Tuesday,” PAGASA said. (ANGEL F. JOSE)
