“It is not enough to merely distribute aid. We urge the government to be proactive by increasing the budget for disaster risk reduction programs instead of Confidential and Intelligence Funds.” Rep. France Castro said.

As the destructive Typhoon Kristine makes another landfall in the country, ACT Teachers Partylist Representative France Castro calls on Filipinos to remain vigilant and cautious during the storm. She also emphasized the need to address the root causes of the successive typhoons that continue to devastate livelihoods and claim lives.

“Once again, our country is facing a destructive typhoon. Let us remain cautious and vigilant against the potential dangers brought by the storm,” stated Rep. Castro.

“However, it is also crucial to recognize that no flood control project will protect us if large corporations continue to operate in ways that harm our environment,” added Rep. Castro.

Castro stressed the government’s responsibility to ensure sustainable policies are implemented to protect the environment. “The recurring cycle of environmental destruction is a result of ongoing abuse and neglect of our surroundings,” said Rep. Castro.

“We call on the government to prioritize the welfare of the Filipino masses by safeguarding our natural resources rather than promoting the interests of large corporations for profit,” she added.

Finally, she emphasized that the state should focus its full attention on strengthening disaster risk reduction programs rather than increasing funds for confidential and intelligence purposes.

“Unless we improve our disaster risk reduction programs, the culture of insufficient aid for our fellow citizens affected by typhoons will persist. No Filipino should live in fear and hunger every time a typhoon approaches due to government negligence.”#
