As we Filipinos stand on the precipice of yet another election cycle in the Philippines, we are once again confronted with the harsh realities of our democratic process. The candidates who have filed their Certificates of Candidacy before the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) reveal a familiar narrative: a cacophony of personalities that oscillate between the new, the uncertain, and the entrenched figures of TRAPO (traditional politician). This juxtaposition raises a critical question: Are we truly advancing in our democratic journey, or are we merely reinforcing the same old structures that have long hindered our progress?
At first glance, the diverse candidates might suggest a vibrant democracy. Yet, a closer examination unveils a troubling trend—the entrenchment of political dynasties that have shifted from local dominance to monopolizing national positions, particularly in the Senate. What was once a localized issue is now a national democratic crisis, as families effectively consolidate power, creating a political aristocracy that disregards the very essence of equal representation.
The Philippine Constitution, heralded as a beacon of democratic ideals, provides us with the framework to engage in political affairs. However, the reality is starkly different. Deep-seated socio-cultural issues have led us to this point where our political choices and exercises often reflect feudalistic, aristocratic, and oligarchic tendencies. We find ourselves trapped in a system where we choose leaders who perpetuate their own interests, rather than those who genuinely advocate for the welfare of the Filipino people.
Moreover, the Party-list system in the country, originally designed to amplify marginalized voices, has been systematically bastardized by business and political families. Instead of serving its noble intent, it has become a convenient vehicle for opportunists eager to secure congressional seats without any genuine commitment to representation. This distortion of purpose underscores the urgent need for reform, as it only exacerbates the disconnect between the electorate and those who claim to serve them. As we approach the May 10, 2025 midterm election, it is critically necessary that we, Filipinos must reflect on our political choices.
We, the Filipino people, deserve better. The time has come for us to demand candidates who prioritize the collective welfare over personal or familial gain. We must reject the “beasts” choices—those whose interests lie solely in their own advancement—and instead champion the “best,” choices those who are committed to uplifting the greatest number of Filipinos. The path to a truly democratic society lies in our hands. We must engage critically with the political landscape, recognizing the implications of our choices and the power they hold.
Let us not succumb to the allure of familiar names, glitters, and good faces, but rather, let us seek out those who dare to challenge the Status Quo, who are unafraid to disrupt the cycle of dominance that has plagued our nation for far too long. As we prepare to cast our votes, let us pray for the courage to choose wisely. The future of the Republic of the Philippines depends on it. The time for meaningful change is now; let us not waste this opportunity to reshape the political narrative for the betterment of all Filipinos.
