Former President Rodrigo “The Punisher” Duterte will now serve as a “co-detainee” in the Scheveningen Detention Center in The Hague, Netherlands, alongside the so-called “Butcher of Bosnia,” Ratko Mladić, a former Bosnian Serb general, convicted of genocide.

Mladić, 83 years old, was sentenced to life imprisonment in June 2021 for crimes including the genocide of Bosniaks in Srebrenica, persecution of Bosniaks and Croats during the war, acts of terrorism against the population of Sarajevo through a campaign of “shelling and sniping” during the siege of the city and taking UN peacekeepers hostage, according to a report by balkaninsight.com.

Mladić has been detained since 2011, and in May 2024, the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals rejected his request to serve his life sentence in Serbia citing inadequate healthcare in detention.

Court President Graciela Gatti Santana stated that the sentence must be served in states with agreements with the United Nations for such purposes, and Serbia was not a “viable option.” She added, “Having served only approximately 13 years of his life sentence, Mladić has not yet reached the eligibility threshold for early release.”

Duterte arrived at the Scheveningen Detention Center last night after being arrested by Interpol at NAIA on Tuesday morning under an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity. (ROSE NOVENARIO)
