After being held in captivity for 429 days, all 17 Filipino seafarers seized by Houthi rebels in Yemen returned home and reunited with their families last night.

The seafarers arrived from Oman at about 9:30 p.m. and were met by government officials at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Houthi rebels freed the Filipinos on Wednesday with the help of Oman Sultan Haitham bin Tarik who mediated for their release.

The Houthis, in retaliation for Israel’s offensive in Gaza, hijacked the cargo vessel Galaxy Leader near Hodeidah in November 2023 while on its way to India, taking hostage its 25 crewmembers, including 17 Filipinos.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. thanked His Majesty Haitham bin Tarik, Sultan of Oman and his government for their successful mediation, leading to the release and safe passage of the Filipino seafarers through Oman.

The President also commended the Philippine government agencies and private entities who worked tirelessly with foreign governments and entities for over a year.

He stressed that the incident serves as “a living testament to the importance of signing the Republic Act 12021 or the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers into law.”

The new law protects the rights and welfare of Filipino seamen, promote their full employment and ensure equal opportunities in the maritime industry regardless of gender or creed.

Romualdez lauds Marcos

House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez lauded Marcos and his administration for their successful efforts in ensuring the seafarers’ freedom.

Romualdez expressed solidarity with the families of the seafarers, recognizing their resilience and hope throughout the ordeal.

“Their safe return is a triumph for their families and for the entire Filipino nation. This moment of joy is a reminder of what can be achieved through collaboration, perseverance, and diplomacy,” he said.

He emphasized the need to continue strengthening policies that protect the welfare of overseas Filipino workers, citing the enactment of RA 12021 as a crucial step in ensuring the rights, safety and opportunities for Filipino maritime professionals.

“The House of Representatives remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting legislation and reforms that promote the dignity, security and prosperity of all overseas Filipino workers,” Romualdez said. (WILMA N. YAMZON)
