Delay in the Impeachment Process of VP Duterte: A Hindrance to Accountability

The news surrounding the P125 million spent in just 11 days in 2022, along with the staggering P612.5 million in confidential funds used by Vice President Sara Duterte’s office, is deeply troubling, remarked Alyn Andamo, secretary general of Filipino Nurses United and a senatorial candidate from the Makabayan Coalition.

“The prolonged delay of over a month in the impeachment proceedings is a setback in addressing accountability for corruption. Vice President Sara Duterte has not provided proof regarding the public funds sourced from taxpayers,” Andamo emphasized.

Duterte is currently facing three impeachment complaints in the House of Representatives, citing alleged violations of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, plunder, malversation, bribery, graft, corruption, and other serious offenses.

It can be recalled that President Marcos has pointed out the “very poor” timing of the impeachment calls against Duterte, given the impending electoral campaign period.

He also noted that establishing a quorum has become challenging as Congress members and Senators are preoccupied with their campaigns.

“It is imperative that both the House of Representatives and the Senate expedite the impeachment process. This matter is urgent for the Filipino people, as it addresses the concerns raised by the complainants and aims to restore public trust. Accountability for corruption must begin with the nation’s top officials,” Andamo stressed. (ROSE NOVENARIO)
