VP Duterte’s trust, performance ratings continue to decline in Q3, OCTA says

The trust and performance ratings of Vice President Sara Duterte continued to plummet in the third quarter of this year amid her failure to explain how her office spent confidential funds, Octa Research said on Thursday, October 30.

Survey results from the Tugon ng Masa conducted from September 4 to 7 showed that Duterte’s trust rating dropped by six points to 59 percent in the third quarter from 65 percent, while her performance rating recorded a decline of eight points to 52 percent from 60 percent.

Distrust in Duterte currently stands at 14 percent, with 27 percent of respondents remaining undecided. Fifteen percent of the respondents expressed dissatisfaction with her performance, while 33 percent remained undecided.

OCTA noted that this may indicate “a growing uncertainty among the electorate.”

“It is crucial to highlight that Vice President Duterte-Carpio’s ratings have steadily decreased for over two straight quarters in 2024,” Octa said.

“This downward trajectory in trust ratings is stark compared to March 2023, when she enjoyed an impressive trust level of 87 percent. Such fluctuations indicate a shifting sentiment among the electorate and the potential impact of current political dynamics,” Octa added.

While the Vice President retains a high trust level in Mindanao at 95 percent, her trust rating in Metro Manila has seen a significant decline of 13 points, dropping to 47 percent from 60 percent.

In Balance Luzon, it fell by nine points to 43 percent from 52 percent, and in Visayas, it decreased by three points to 63 percent from 69 percent.

OCTA said Duterte obtained majority satisfaction ratings in Visayas at 54 percent and Mindanao at 90 percent.

Regarding socioeconomic classes, Class ABC experienced the most considerable drop in trust for Duterte, falling by 12 points from 64 percent to 52 percent.

Her trust ratings declined across all major regions and socioeconomic classes, except in Class E, which saw a five percentage-point increase, and Mindanao, which remained steady at 95 percent.

On the other hand, 69 percent of Filipinos gave their trust to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., while 66 percent approved his performance in the third quarter of 2024.

Senate President Francis Escudero and House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez both received strong approval ratings, achieving scores of 65 percent and 62 percent, respectively, for their leadership in Congress.

These congressional leaders maintain significant trust among the majority of Filipinos, with trust ratings of 67 percent for Escudero and 61% for Romualdez.

In contrast, Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo received a trust rating of 15% and a performance rating of 14 percent.

The OCTA carried out its survey last month using face-to-face interviews with 1,200 adults across the country. It has a margin of error of ±3 percent at a 95 percent confidence level.

For subnational estimates in geographic areas, including Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the margin of error is ±6 percent at a 95% confidence level. (TCSP)
