STATEMENT | Rights group to VP Sara: You and your kind are the problem

“Yes VP Sara, you and your kind, you are the problem.”

Rights group KARAPATAN hit back at Vice President Sara Duterte’s remarks saying she is not the country’s biggest problem.

“Sara Duterte and Ferdinand Marcos Jr. are from political clans that perpetuated themselves in power for their own personal benefit and interests. The Marcoses and Dutertes secured the top posts in the country only to continue the same economic and political policies that have trampled on the people’s democratic rights and driven the majority of Filipinos to poverty and despair,” said KARAPATAN secretary general Cristina Palabay.

“The so-called political rift between the Marcoses and Dutertes is only the stink coming out of the rottenness of the Marcos-Duterte regime.”

“On one hand, the Marcoses were restored to power through their ill-gotten wealth amassed during their father’s dictatorship. They made the government their own big syndicated business, resurrecting cronies, beefing up their military machinery, and resorting to the worst lies and historical distortion to deceive the Filipino people,” she explained.

“On the other hand, the Dutertes clung to power by keeping ties with political minions that supported them during the previous term, at the same time making the government the hub of their corrupt and criminal activities, and turning the country into one big killing field by eliminating their rivals and enemies using the armed forces and their death squads,” Palabay added.

Palabay also said that the vice president should stop playing the victim, especially since she remains accountable for the millions of confidential and intelligence funds spent under the Office of the Vice President and as secretary of the Department of Education. At the same time, her father, Rodrigo Duterte, continues to slink away from the Quadcomm hearings on the war on drugs.

Palabay explained further that neither the Marcos nor the Duterte clan is better than the other, as both the Marcoses and Dutertes perpetuated and maintained a rotten system that sold the country to foreign powers, and used the worst of rights violations to kill, arrest, threaten and jail dissenters.

KARAPATAN called on the people to join protests and take action to make the Marcos-Duterte regime accountable for their crimes against the Filipino people.

“Let us not hold back in holding both the Dutertes and the Marcoses accountable for all the killings they are responsible for and the plunder of the nation’s coffers under their rule,” she said.

“Ultimately, the problems of the people, the Marcoses and Dutertes, can only be solved, and faced by the people through our persistent struggle for our rights,” Palabay ended.#
