Abot-kamay na! House approves pro-divorce bill on second reading

The House of Representatives is on the cusp of giving final approval to a measure that would legalize divorce in the Philippines.

This comes after the chamber approved House Bill (HB) No. 9349 on second reading during a plenary session on Wednesday night, May 15.

The bill, principally sponsored by Albay 1st District Rep. Edcel Lagman, aims to reinstitute absolute divorce as an alternative mode for the dissolution of marriage.

The full title of the measure is “An Act Reinstituting Absolute Divorce as an Alternative Mode for the Dissolution of Marriage” .

Senior Deputy Speaker Pampanga 3rd District Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. presided over the bill’s second-reading passage, which was confirmed by a simple voice vote (ayes vs. nays).

This development marks a significant step toward legalizing divorce in the Philippines. (ALEX PIERSON)
