Guo and Yang: How Filipino Identity Became a Commodity in a Corrupt System

The recent Senate hearings on Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) have once again exposed a distressing reality: the integrity of our national security has been compromised for decades. The presence of figures like Antonio Yang and Alice Guo symbolizes a larger issue, where foreign entities exploit our political and administrative systems to their advantage, often at the expense of the Filipino people.

These hearings have highlighted severe vulnerabilities within our key institutions, including the Bureau of Immigration, the Philippine National Police, the Philippine Statistics Authority, and the Department of the Interior and Local Government. It is alarming how these agencies have facilitated the entry and operations of individuals who disregard our national security and interests. Yet, amidst this exposure, a critical question looms: where is the fiscal accountability for the intelligence and confidential funds these institutions receive?

Despite substantial budgets intended to safeguard our nation, the infiltration by individuals like Yang and Guo, both Chinese Citizens, raises serious concerns. How can we trust institutions that consistently fail to protect us from such exploitation? Transparency is not just desired—it is our right. The Filipino people deserve answers about how these funds are being utilized. Despite these allocations, why do we continue to see foreign actors manipulating our bureaucratic systems?

The Senate hearings, led by Senator Risa Hontiveros, and the QUAD Committee chaired by Representative Ace Barbers, appear to focus more on political theatrics than on genuine accountability. Many Filipinos perceive these proceedings as mere political posturing rather than a serious effort to tackle corruption and inefficiency. This perception has led to public apathy, as citizens grow weary of what seems to be a recurring cycle of blame without resolution.

If Congress identifies probable cause, it is just and right that these issues are brought before a competent court.

We must demand that those in power be held accountable and insist on investigations into all government offices involved in this fiasco. These institutions must answer for their negligence and failure to perform their duties.

The Filipino people have had enough of the political theatrics. We urgently need corrective solutions and authentic justice. It is time to reclaim our national identity and protect our sovereignty from those who undermine it. The POGO saga is not just a story of corruption; it is a wake-up call for all Filipinos to unite in demanding accountability and integrity within our institutions. Our nation’s future depends on it.

We must move beyond mere rhetoric and demand concrete actions. This includes reforming the very systems that allow such exploitation to occur. It involves strengthening oversight mechanisms, ensuring transparency in the allocation and use of funds, and fostering a culture of accountability across all levels of government.

The stakes are too high to ignore. Our national security, economic stability, and, ultimately, our sovereignty are at risk. The time for change is now, and it is incumbent upon every Filipino to demand it. Let us not allow the POGO issue to become another chapter of unaddressed corruption. Instead, let it be the catalyst for real, lasting reform that secures a better future for all Filipinos.
