Prelude to price hike? Aklan towns record swine flu

CONSUMERS may as well brace for an increase in pork meat after the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) declared several towns in Aklan province under “red zone.”

Among the municipalities referred to as “red zones” are Ibajay, Altavas and Tangalan, which according to the agency have confirmed cases of African Swine Fever (ASF).

Meanwhile, 14 other Aklan towns were placed under the so-called “pink zone” or areas which are at risk of being infected with ASF for two reasons – proximity to the towns under “red zone” or in view of dense swine population.

Tagged as “yellow zone” are Kalibo, Malinao, Libacao, Balete, Madalag, Makato, Banga, New Washington, Numancia (downgraded from red), Lezo (downgraded from red), Batan (downgraded from red), Nabas (downgraded from red), and Malay (downgraded from red).

Interestingly, Numancia, Lezo, Batan, Nabas and Malay previously recorded confirmed ASF cases but were downgraded after being “neutralized” through government interventions. (ANGEL F. JOSE)
