President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. appointed Joee Guilas as part of his Economic Team serving as Undersecretary of the Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs (OSAP-IEA) under Secretary Frederick D. Go.

USec Guilas’ appointment took effect on May 15, 2024.

This is his first foray into public service.

“I always had it in my heart to serve the people through the government as a way of giving back to the taxpayers who gave me the means to finish my education” Guilas said adding that he “thanked the Lord for giving the chance to fulfill one of his dreams.”

Prior to his entry to government, Usec Guilas was a respected multi-media personality with a solid experience as journalist spanning 30 years.  He has done radio, both AM and FM, written columns for several publications and broadsheets, and hosted programs in both traditional and digital media.

Usec Guilas’ hard work as media practitioner did not go unnoticed.  He made history as the first news anchor from the state-run People’s Television Network to win as Best Male Newscaster in the Philippine Movie Press Club’s 35th Star Awards for Television.  He was likewise cited as among the nominees for Best Television News Anchor in the prestigious Asian Television Awards held in Vietnam earlier this year.

Outside the realm of media, Usec Guilas is a highly-recognized corporate professional, having occupied senior executive posts in various companies across different industries.

Prior to his Malacanang appointment, Usec Guilas was Vice President and Director of Newport World Resorts (formerly Resorts World Manila), winning for the company more than 50 local and international awards and accolades.

His expertise in the fields of business communications, marketing, advertising, public relations, customer service excellence and product development will come in handy as he performs his current government role of forging strategic partnerships and engagements among various audiences to promote the Philippines as Asia’s most promising investment hub.

In this connection, Guilas said, “Now it’s time to give it my best shot to help millions of Filipinos fulfill theirs (dreams)… officially.”

A highly-admired academician and mentor, USec Guilas taught at the Far Eastern University and is a member of the Miss Universe Philippines Council of Advisers.  In addition, he was named among People Asia’s Men Who Matte awardees in 2015 and is a Lifetime Achievement Awardee of the Outstanding Men and Women of the Philippines Awards.

Usec Guilas finished his BS Economics degree from the University of the Philippines, high school education in Torres High School and elementary education in St. Joseph Parochial School.

His father is the late Pablo B. Guilas who also served in Malacanang as a photojournalist and as part of the pioneering team that started the Philippine News Agency during the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr.  (ROSE NOVENARIO)
