Reacting to Pres. Marcos Jr.’s fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA), the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Philippines denounced the administration’s blatant lies about prioritizing education while continuing to neglect the genuine demands of teachers and education workers.
“Sabi ni Marcos Jr., umusad daw tayo sa pagbabago at nangunguna sa listahan ng administrasyon ang edukasyon. Inasahan na natin na magpapaulan na naman ng kasinungalingan at magyayabang ng pekeng pag-unla dahil ang tunay na kalagayan ng bansa, naiiwan ang mamamayan na lubog sa patong-patong na krisis. Kapos pa rin ang badyet sa edukasyon kaya patuloy ang paglobo ng mga kakulangan, baon pa rin sa utang ang mga guro at kawani dahil sa hindi nakabubuhay na sweldo, napag-iwanan ng panahon ang benepisyo, laganap ang kontraktwalisasyon sa gobyerno man o pribado, at palpak ang mga pagbabago sa sistema na pabigat lang sa mga guro at bata,” stated Ruby Bernardo, ACT Chairperson.
ACT slammed Pres. Marcos Jr. for once again remaining silent on teachers’ and education workers’ urgent demands for livable salaries, improved benefits, humane workloads, meaningful promotion, and a decisive plan to resolve the massive shortages in the education system. The group also blasted the President’s grandstanding on accountability against plunderers despite the fact that, a year after his promises of justice, no major plunderer has been jailed, only a negligible amount of stolen public funds has been recovered, and Marcos Jr. himself continues to evade accountability over the multibillion-peso flood control corruption scandal.
“Mukhang walang balak ang administrasyon na iangat ang kalagayan ng mga guro at ibangon ang edukasyon. Tikom ang pangulo sa panawagan nating disente at nakabubuhay na sweldo at sapat na pondo sa edukasyon. Napako rin ang pangakong laptop para sa lahat ng guro at digitally-ready na mga paaralan. Panatag daw ang kanyang loob sa pagtaas ng kalidad ng edukasyon samantalang daan-libo ang kulang na guro, kawani, slid-aralan at milyon-milyon bata ang walang aklat at learning materials. Nabubuhay yata sa pantasya ang pangulo habang nakakulong sa malagim na realidad ang sektor ng edukasyon,” lamented Bernardo.
ACT also called out Pres. Marcos Jr. for invoking collective responsibility in protecting the youth when it is his administration that has long abandoned its own responsibility to uphold the rights and welfare of children and young people.
“Ang karahasan at kapabayaan na naglagay sa kapahamakan sa mga guro at bata sa paaralan at kumitil sa buhay ng ilang kabataan ay malinaw na bunga ng bulok na sistemang pinaghaharian ng administrasyon. Ang dinaratnang sistema ng mga bata ay puno ng paghihirap, pandarahas at panunupil sa mamamayan habang pinoprotektahan, pinatatakas, at pinawawalang-sala ang mga nasa kapangyarihan. Ipinagkakait ang pondo sa edukasyon, panlipunang serbisyo, at makataong pamumuhay at ibinubuhos ang kaban ng bayan sa maleta at bulsa ng mga kurakot at abusado,” Bernardo explained.
ACT challenged the Marcos Jr. administration to break out of its self-serving bubble, confront the real state of the nation, and stop hiding behind inflated statistics and superficial reforms that merely serve as a facade for an inept, corrupt, and puppet government that continues to sell out the country’s sovereignty, territories, and resources to foreign powers.
The group reiterated its longstanding demands for a P50,000 entry-level salary for teachers, an increase in the Personnel Economic Relief Allowance (PERA) to P5,000 for all government employees, an end to contractualization in both the public and private sectors, education spending equivalent to at least 6% of the country’s GDP, and genuine accountability for plunderers, corrupt officials, and all abusers of power.#
