The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) condemned the arrest of DZRH reporter Misael Boy Gonzales Jr., calling it a retaliatory act and an abuse of the law.
Police detained Gonzales on Wednesday over alleged violations of the Data Privacy Act after he reported details of an arrest warrant against Manila Councilor Rosalino Ibay Jr., who is facing accusations of lascivious conduct under the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.
NUJP stressed that Gonzales was fulfilling his duty to report on a matter of public interest, especially since the case involves alleged abuse of a minor by a public servant.
The group warned that the Data Privacy Act, which exempts journalistic work, has repeatedly been weaponized to intimidate and harass media workers.
“While the security of personal information is important, the DPA is also commonly used to deny access to essential information and for ‘lawfare’ suits to deter or punish coverage,” NUJP said.
The group demanded the immediate dropping of charges against Gonzales.
Gonzales secured temporary release Thursday morning, March 12, upon posting bail at the MPD. (RRN)
