Reyes Not Surprised by Junking of Impeachment Complaints, Calls for Protest

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan President Renato Reyes said he was not surprised by the House Justice Committee’s decision to junk the impeachment complaints against President Bongbong Marcos, stressing that the move was anticipated and reflects a system designed to block accountability.

“The junking of the impeachment complaints by the Justice Committee is not surprising and we have warned against it early on,” Reyes declared.

“Our complaint was subjected to legal hairsplitting and all sorts of obstructionist tactics to prevent us from moving to the next stage of the process which would require Marcos to answer the allegations against him.”

Reyes emphasized that the complainants had already met the requirements at the initial stage.

“What was only required at the current stage was a recital of the offenses that constitute betrayal of public trust. We were able to do that in our complaint yet they blocked our complaint from moving forward.”

He accused Marcos Jr. of deliberately avoiding scrutiny.

“Mr. Marcos does not want the truth about DPWH allocables and kickbacks to come out, that is why the Justice Committee junked the impeachment complaint. He does not want to answer the charges against him at the proper forum. He does not want to explain abuses in the Unprogrammed Appropriations and his role in approving the releases for anomalous flood control projects. He does not want to explain his role in the transfer of PhilHealth funds to bankroll these flood control projects.”

“All the more it has become necessary to protest against this rotten system that avoids accountability of the corrupt and powerful. Ituloy ang protesta hanggang managot ang lahat nang sangkot. Kita-kita sa Pebrero 25,” Reyes concluded with a call to action. (ZIA LUNA)
