The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has officially proclaimed Gabriela Women’s Party (GWP) as one of the winning groups in this year’s national elections, awarding its congressional seat to first nominee and former Kabataan Partylist Rep. Sarah Elago.
The proclamation, held at Palacio del Gobernador and led by Comelec Chair George Erwin Garcia, followed the disqualification of Duterte Youth for violating election rules—clearing the path for GWP’s return to Congress.
Speaking to reporters, Elago vowed swift action, saying GWP will immediately engage in ongoing investigations into corruption in public infrastructure projects.
GWP reenters the House of Representatives as part of the progressive Makabayan Bloc, alongside ACT Teachers and Kabataan. This marks the party’s eighth consecutive victory in the partylist elections—a testament to its enduring grassroots support and legislative impact.
As the world’s only women’s political party currently in power, GWP has authored and co-authored landmark laws advancing women’s and children’s rights, including:
– Expanded Maternity Leave Law
– Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act
– Anti-Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) Law
– End Child Rape Law
– Safe Spaces Act
– Anti-Child Pornography Act
– Occupational Safety and Health Law
– Ratification of ILO Convention on Workplace Violence and Harassment
– Amendments to address Electronic VAW
Beyond legislation, GWP has played a critical watchdog role—probing human rights violations and corruption, including the alleged misuse of confidential and intelligence funds by Vice President Sara Duterte.
From Liza Maza to Arlene Brosas, GWP’s legacy remains rooted in fearless advocacy, feminist legislation, and uncompromising accountability. Its latest win signals not just continuity—but renewed momentum for women-led resistance in the halls of power. (ZIA LUNA)
