9 more areas yield positive to deadly red tide

ALL forms of shellfish in nine more areas are not safe for human consumption, says the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), citing findings of paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) or toxic red tide beyond the regulatory limit.

In its latest bulletin, BFAR said red tide toxins were detected in shellfish collected and tested from Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur; San Benito in Surigao del Norte; Tungawan in Zamboanga Sibugay.

Likewise positive for the deadly red tide are the areas of Daram, Zumareaga, Irong-irong, Villareal, Cambatutay, and Maqueda in Samar; Matarinao in Eastern Samar; Cancabato Bay in Leyte; and Puerto Bay, Puerto Princesa City in Palawan

“All types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from the areas shown above are NOT SAFE for human consumption. Fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before,” BFAR said.

According to BFAR, eating toxin-contaminated shellfish can cause paralytic shellfish poisoning in humans. (ANGEL f. JOSE)
